Announcements:

Book reports are going home this week.  Students need to read a NON-FICTION story and then write 3 facts that they learned from the story.  Please help them choose an appropriate book to do their report on.

English:

We are starting Unit 3 in reading street.  The theme of this unit is "creative ideas." This week our question of the week is, "When does support from others help with a creative idea?" We will be reading, Pearl and Wagner: Two Good Friends. The genre is Fantasy and we will be writing our own fantasy story with animals during the week.
Our phonics /spelling pattern: vowel patterns: e, ee, ea, and y
Comprehension skill: we will be taking about author's purpose.  We learn that authors usually write for the purpose of entertaining, informing, or persuading.  As you read with your child you can ask them questions about why the author would have written that story.  What evidence is there in the story that helps them know the purpose?
Conventions: We are learning about verbs.
Vocabulary skill: antonyms
Fluency skill: Appropriate reading rate

Math:

We have been learning strategies to help us do addition and subtraction problems mentally.  Look for topic 6 to be assigned online.

French:

We are learning the /oi/ sound this week.

 Social Studies:

Through the month of December we will be learning about different Holidays that are celebrated.  We will specifically focus on Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa.  We will be doing a little research on them and compare and contrast them.  If you celebrate Hanukkah or Kwanzaa would you mind sending me an email, I would love to have you come in and tell us more about the holidays you celebrate!
