Weekly News

Important Dates:
March 19 Parents and Pastries
April 9th - Math-a-thon
April 14-18 Spring Break

Announcements:
Thank you for taking the time to come to parent teacher conferences.  As always if there is anything we can do or questions you have feel free to call or email us.
The reading homework this week is a book report.  Students should use a non-fiction book to complete the assignment.  Most students checked out a non-fiction book in the library today.  Also as a reminder students should be reading 20 minutes a night as part of their daily homework routine.  Students should not spend more than 30-40 minutes a night on homework.  Have them read and do a math page or two but they shouldn't have to spend hours to get it done.  If your child does better getting it done all one night that is fine, but the idea is to spend a few minutes each day working on homework and reviewing the concepts we are learning in school.  Don't forget to ask them questions about what they read, I know it gets hectic but a few questions is all it takes to make sure they are comprehending what they are reading.  Thanks for all the time you spend at home working with your students it really makes a difference at school!

We still need classroom volunteers for the month of March.  If you would like to come in but the times on the signup don't work for you, email me and I would love to work out a time that would work for both of us.
English:
We are on Unit 5 Week 2.  The question of the week is, "What can we do to be responsible citizens of the community."  We will be reading a realistic fiction story called Carl the Complainer and will be talking about how instead of just complaining about problems what we could do to solve them.
Comprehension strategy- We are spiraling around and talking about cause and effect again.  This is something that a lot of students have not quite mastered yet, so make sure that you review with your child and ask them some cause and effect questions.  We learn that Cause is why something happens, and Effect is what happens.
Spelling strategy- We are learning about the prefixes, re-, un-, dis-, pre-
Conventions- We are learning about plural pronouns (we, they, us, etc.)

Math:
We are working on measurement and will begin talking about fractions.

French:
This week are learning the /gn/ sound.

Science:
We will be learning about the moon.
