Important Dates:
September 12- Reading Testing
September 25- Parent DLI meeting

A note from Ms. Waddell:

Parents:  there will be a Parent Only dual immersion meeting at 5:00 pm on Wednesday September 25th.  We will be discussing French proficiency. We will all be meeting together in the gym for an overall proficiency presentation. You will then have about 20 minutes in your child's classroom if you have specific questions. Parents of 4th graders will receive the results of the proficiency exam their students took last spring.  Please mark your calendar for this event.
Sincerely,
Christy Waddell, principal

English:
We are on Unit 1 Week 4.  Our question of the week is, "What can we learn by exploring the desert?"  We will be reading, A Walk in the Desert. It is expository text that tells about the plants and animals you can find in the desert.
Comprehension skill: We are talking about main idea and details.  This can be a difficult concept for students to identify, you can work on it at home with your child simply by asking them to identify the main idea and details of a paragraph or a story they've read.  It does work best with nonfiction books.
Our phonics /spelling pattern: suffix -ed, -ing
Conventions: We are talking about declarative sentences (statements) and interrogative sentences (questions).

Math:
We are working on topic 2 which includes doubles facts, near doubles, and adding three digits together.  Doubles facts are very important for students to learn and will help them as we will eventually get into multiplication.  We also teach near doubles as a strategy for students to complete addition facts quicker.  For example if I know that 6+6=12 then 6+7 is the same as 6+6 just adding one more.  I hope that makes sense.

French:
This week will are learning the  /et/ sound.

Social Studies:
We are talking about our community and the similarities and differences of members of our community.  We are also going to be talking a little about immigration to the United States.
