Announcements:
Homework folders are here! Coming home with the folders is the information on how to log into pearson successnet. I'm going to save paper and not print out your students test scores each week. You can access their scores by following the steps below:
Successnet Instructions
Also the math page that came home is an example of what we do for the bobcat award. In order to mark off of the goal, the students need to be able to answer 100 math problems correctly in 6 minutes or less. Students don't need to do that for the homework but I want to let you know what the expectation is for the bobcat award.
I meant to explain a little about how I grade the spelling sentences on the Friday tests. Each sentence is worth 5 points. Students get a point for each of the following that are written correctly: capitalization, punctuation, spacing, handwriting, and spelling. So your child could actually spell the whole sentence wrong and still get 4/5 for all the other elements. I'm looking to see that the students know what a sentence needs not just spelling.
English:
We are on Unit 1 Week 3. Our question
of the week is "What can we discover by exploring nature?" The genre of our story is realistic fiction. We will be reading "Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night."
Phonics skill: We are working on consonant blends, which is when you have two or more letters whose sounds are blended together when pronouncing a word. (ex: str in strawberry)
Comprehension Strategy: We are identifying the character and setting of stories. An easy thing you can do with your students at home is just ask them questions about the story they are reading. Ask them who the characters are and what they know about them. Ask them what the setting of the story is, have them describe it to you. You can even do this with TV shows or movies they are watching.
Conventions: We are focusing on identifying the predicate of a sentence.
French: We are working in Gafi and learning the /
è/ sound.
Math: We are still on Topic 1 "Understanding Addition and
Subtraction." We will start topic 2 this week. We will be taking the topic 1 test on Friday.
